These Halloween Whoopie Pies are soft, cake-like cookies sandwiched with fluffy, colorful cream filling. Decorated in festive Halloween colors like orange and purple, they’re chewy, sweet, and perfect for parties, trick-or-treating, or family baking nights.

- For the Cookies:
- 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (45 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
- ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- For the Filling:
- 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups (240 g) powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2–3 tbsp heavy cream or milk
- Orange and purple gel food coloring
- Optional Decorations:
- Halloween sprinkles
- Candy eyes
- Black or orange sanding sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla extract; mix well.
- Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk into the wet ingredients, mixing until smooth. Do not overmix.
- Drop tablespoon-sized rounds of this Halloween whoopie pie batter onto prepared sheets, spacing 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until cookies spring back when gently pressed.
- Allow to cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- Make the filling: Beat butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and cream or milk until fluffy.
- Divide into two bowls and tint one with orange food coloring and the other with purple.
- Assemble whoopie pies: Pipe or spread filling onto the flat side of one cookie. Top with another cookie to form a sandwich.
- Decorate: Roll edges in Halloween sprinkles or add candy eyes for a festive finish on your Halloween whoopie pies.
Notes
- Use buttermilk for soft, moist cookies.
- Do not overbake—the cookies should remain soft.
- Chill assembled whoopie pies briefly to help filling set.
