Description

These Halloween Whoopie Pies are soft, cake-like cookies sandwiched with fluffy, colorful cream filling. Decorated in festive Halloween colors like orange and purple, they’re chewy, sweet, and perfect for parties, trick-or-treating, or family baking nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Cookies:
  • 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (45 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • For the Filling:
  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240 g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 23 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • Orange and purple gel food coloring
  • Optional Decorations:
  • Halloween sprinkles
  • Candy eyes
  • Black or orange sanding sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla extract; mix well.
  4. Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk into the wet ingredients, mixing until smooth. Do not overmix.
  5. Drop tablespoon-sized rounds of this Halloween whoopie pie batter onto prepared sheets, spacing 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until cookies spring back when gently pressed.
  7. Allow to cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  8. Make the filling: Beat butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and cream or milk until fluffy.
  9. Divide into two bowls and tint one with orange food coloring and the other with purple.
  10. Assemble whoopie pies: Pipe or spread filling onto the flat side of one cookie. Top with another cookie to form a sandwich.
  11. Decorate: Roll edges in Halloween sprinkles or add candy eyes for a festive finish on your Halloween whoopie pies.

Notes

  • Use buttermilk for soft, moist cookies.
  • Do not overbake—the cookies should remain soft.
  • Chill assembled whoopie pies briefly to help filling set.
  • If filling is too thin, add more powdered sugar.
  • These Halloween whoopie pies are best assembled close to serving time.
