Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of day-old bread (French, brioche, or challah work well)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • Butter, for greasing the baking dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut the loaf of bread into cubes. Place the cubes into the greased baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes in the baking dish. Gently push down the bread to ensure it soaks up the liquid.
  5. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips and chopped nuts (if using) over the top of the soaked bread mixture.
  6. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
